What do you think they would do? Do you think it would be in their interests to initiate terror attacks all over the world? That would be their death. They might try it, but I think it would be a catastrophic mistake - for them.

Al Qaeda didn't even try to do that, after 9/11.

It neglects to predict Russia and China's response to such a strike.

What do you think their reaction will be? Do you think Russia and China like the mullahs? Have some special affection for the Islamic Republic? China will go whichever way the wind blows, it doesn't have a stake in the fight. It needs a good relationship with the US far more than it needs a good relationship with Iran. The Islamic Republic has to sell it's oil to somebody. And I don't think teh Chinese much care who they buy oil from.

Russia might be a problem, but Russia seems to be focussed on expanding it's influence in Europe. It views Iran as a valuable tool for distracting the US. When that tool loses it's value, it will be abandoned. I doubt Russia wants to go to war with the US, over Iran. They'd much rather become the dominant power in Europe while the US is busy doing other things, if they can.

That's my read, anyway.programmer craighttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17566950406349754166noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36955074.post-51363225400031824412007-08-29T06:32:00.000-07:002007-08-29T06:32:00.000-07:00It would be overly-optimistic to assume such a str...It would be overly-optimistic to assume such a strike would not have significant consequences. It overlooks completely the tentacles of Tehran which can make mischief in many locations around the world.

If the regime occupying Iran did not fall, it would be disaster.

It neglects to predict Russia and China's response to such a strike.blankhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06076471580399507200noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36955074.post-86012281340699502922007-08-28T20:20:00.000-07:002007-08-28T20:20:00.000-07:00دیر و زود داره ولی سوخت و سوز نداره!دیر و زود داره ولی سوخت و سوز نداره!Winstonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02058643406189544769noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36955074.post-83136137162534585242007-08-28T14:31:00.000-07:002007-08-28T14:31:00.000-07:00Excellent article, Serendip. The debate on how to d...Excellent article, Serendip.

The debate on how to deal with Iran is thus occurring in a political context in the US that is hard for those in Europe or the Middle East to understand. A context that may seem to some to be divorced from reality, but with the US ability to project military power across the globe, the reality of Washington DC is one that matters perhaps above all else. ...

I found that part to be the most telling. I don't understand why so many people seem to be unaware that on the issue of the Islamic Republic, there is near complete unanimity in the United States. It's not like politicians are trying to hide their views. This isn't an Iraq issue, and it's not a Bush Administration issue. The US can and will attack Iran, if it proceeds with it's nuclear weapons program.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01227566683620161788noreply@blogger.com
