13 Out!

Iranian-Americans celebrating sizdeh-badar day in Los Angles.

Today is the Persian "Sizdeh Bedar" (the end of 2-weeks celebration of Norooz or New Year) which basically means "ridding yourself of bad luck" (throwing out the unlucky 13).

People go into the countryside on picnics and have customs like unmarried girls tying a knot in grass to ensure finding and keeping a husband.

Also wheat grass grown by families over the New Year March 20/21) is thrown in to flowing water to carry away the previous year. Though originally it was placed in dry areas to entice rain.

Wheat grass grown 3-weeks prior to
spring equinox or Iranian New Year.
