Darfur: Growing Violence

LONDON (AFP) - Protests took place around the world on Sunday to demand that world leaders act to prevent further bloodshed in Darfur on the fourth anniversary of the conflict's start. With more than 2 million people driven from their homes, Darfur has been described as one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. To learn how you can help, visit the International Rescue Committee website.

Despite the signing of the Darfur Peace Agreement in May 2006, fighting is increasing across the region and the people of Darfur are suffering violence, atrocities and abduction. Amid desperate conditions, the International Rescue Committee delivers lifesaving aid, protects women and girls, and speaks out for global action on behalf of the Sudanese people.
Renowned "I Love NY" designer Milton Glaser has designed a poster (above picture) to raise awareness of the crisis. Proceeds will benefit the IRC.

It is so sad to hear about the genocide that continues in the name of Islam. This is absurd.

So, here's the question: How much money is being spent on trying 'raise awareness' about Darfur? I mean with all these civic functions, rallies, and such, folks have got to be spending *some* money on banners, permits, signs, advertising, flyers, and the such like, in every city and town and suburb where a few committed folks are trying to do this.

Tens of thousands of dollars? Hundreds? A short million?

Why ask that? Simple.

How much does it take to hire a few mercenary companies for a year and with contingent follow-on contracts to do and DO SOMETHING about this?

Yes that is one of the great two solutions that are readily available to those who WANT SOMETHING DONE NOW. And you could probably get *someone* to sanction it, maybe the UN although I think the President would be more than glad to sign off on some 'volunteer policing operation' concept. Surely some minor Nation could do that, too, as a 'Humanitarian Rescue Operation'. Simple signature on a piece of paper from a Nation State. You supply the troops, someone else supplies the cover.

Do we ever hear of that from those wishing to raise awareness? How about putting that up as an operation on a web site, tell how much it will cost, and then send those folks out to *churches* to ask if they could beg for money? Americans love to fund 'relief operations' and if you explain that mercenaries have to be used, well there is a swath of America that will *love that* too.

That is if you want something DONE and don't mind too much about being PC in getting it done. The PC route just gets you one thing: lots of folks dead and no action. There is a huge, long list that only takes a few stops in Rwanda and the Balkans to show how it isn't done well if at all by the UN. They have demonstrated their incompetence and I would, personally trust well paid mercenaries to do this or folks that trained themselves up to get it done.

Money meet mouth.

Mouth, money.

No need for 'awareness' just go to those moral communities and tell them the horrors and what you are going to DO come hell or high water to save people.

The American People give more in charity and donations and gifts than any other people on this planet and *governments* run far behind them, including the US. Once you get some security then Doctors without Borders and the various charitable airlift groups can start bringing in doctors, supplies and other folks.

I judge the sincereness of those wanting something done by what they propose to do. So far I hear much in the way of verbiage, little in the way of actually solving the problem. That tells me how serious they are.

They aren't.

This can't be done the PC route, save if you mean 'personal computer'. Online donations and just getting out there with hat in hand, going to those communities that will listen and understand pain and suffering and wish to alleviate same. No marches. No protests. No teach-ins. No gatherings.

DO.

Not Talk.

As with all things that need to be done that governments can't be bothered to do you are left with DIY. Might ground a few folks in this 'real world' to have to sit down with mercenaries and dicker about price and insurance and such. And then suck it in and go through with it. Because that is better than *nothing*, which is going on now.

That is the Jacksonian Solution to Darfur: hire others or do it yourself and stop whining in either event.

AJ: I couldn't agree more. It is always harder to *give of yourself* rather than of *your resources*.
