Iran: Another Pretext for Second Cultural Revolution :
"An incident in the classroom involving a part-time instructor, has led to the expulsion of the instructor from the Tehran university's Arts Faculty and more rowdy protests to "clean up" the universities by Baseej students. Kamangir describes the incident in detail and has pictures of the protests and placards.It is said the instructor may be the seventy year old Nouredin Zarrinkelk, the father of animation in Iran." I was wondering how these guys can justify murdering a human being even if he has deliberately satirized the girl. It is noticeable that the second and the third guys have not even read the blog carefully to see the instructor’s name there. I know these kinds of comments are frequent among this generation of religious guys, but they are still shocking and for me. I don’t know if the female student has ever thought of what the girl of the movie or that mum has felt when facing brutal impolite police forces. "
I have to say to Azadeh that It will take a few decades to overthrow the mullahs, at best, and even then, a significant part of the population will allow the mullahs to regain much (but not all) of their influence within four or five years. When in doubt, Iran will turn to the legacy of Ayatollah Khomeini and all the other lunatic ayatollahs and mullahs because that's what Muslims do. The stoning is there,but it will be even worse, because the culture is very deep. Now the courts order it, then everyone will be doing it. Shah was really doing a good job changing the culture, but the last 30 years of encouraging this sick behaivior, means it will be maybe another (300!!) years till it changes.

We keep hearing how the youth of Iran are all in favor of regime change. Is that BS or what? What percent are "religious guys".
Rancher: This group constitutes about 20% of the population with all the finanacial backing and support of the Islamic Republic. This particular group and their families are a 'priviliged segment of society' and can get away practically with murder.(as they did recently in a very controversial case).
The rest of the people are powerless and as President Bush aptly put it are held hostage by a bunch of thugs. The regime has ample coercive means to crack down on opposition (witness its brutal suppression of past student demonstrations) and, with the financial wherewithal provided by $70-per-barrel oil, can insulate itself from internal pressures by buying off potential malcontents.
This group and their families act as informants and spies (the eyes and the ears of the regime) in every neighborhood and monitor all of their neighbors' activities.
Every county has a informant who spies on people and has a file on everyone's background and behavior. They do this voluntarily because that's how they get all their privileges (free health care, free education, priority in being employed, free bank loans, automatic admission to universities, and so on). It is a very 'Stalinist' style of government. Many people fear this group and are disgusted with them because they know how brutal they can be.
This group is not particularly religious. In fact, many real religious people in Iran think, this group of people, have disgraced Islam and are not real muslims. Many real religious people in Iran think that the Islamic Republic is the most Un-islamic gov't in the muslim world. I hope this is helpful.
