NY Terror Plot Connects to Venezuela and Iran

Jungle Mom: "How Kadir was nabbed, via FoxNews.com:Kadir's wife, Isha, said that her husband was nabbed while boarding a flight to Venezuela, where he planned to pick up a travel visa to attend an Islamic religious conference in Iran. He had flown from Guyana to Trinidad on Thursday.
But Kadir's daughter said that her father had no knowledge or association to the plot that aimed to kill thousands of people and trigger an economic catastrophe by blowing up a jet fuel artery that runs through populous residential neighborhoods.
Kadir has no problems with America, would never do anything wrong and would never associate with a group like Al Qaeda, his daughter said."This is a total surprise," she said."

Just another reminder that the threat of terrorism on North American soil has never gone away and is as great as ever, notwithstanding official denials that anything's "imminent" and so on...
There is a $5 million reward for information on Shukrijumah, who officials consider extremely dangerous because of the years he spent living in the Miami area and his known ties to al Qaeda.

Chavez embraced Tehran and he believes that his revolution will be more effective if he works with Islamic revolutionaries. Terhan welcomes anyone willing to spark revolution around the world.

Tehran's fingerprints appear in Iraq and Afghanistan as well. Evidence does not exist to put the smoking gun in the hands of Iran's religious leaders. Of course, the direct flights between Tehran and NY I posted about on my blog would have made it easier for the suspects to travel to Tehran.

I'll withhold comment and wait for the trial to decide whether these guys belong in the "terrorist" category or the punked "Padilla" category.

Finished my wrap-up of backgrounding on the Caribbean/South American groups and individuals. And I will have to say that no matter *which* group they are associated with, getting the plot early on is a 'good thing'.

The larger group they could be affiliated with is very much in the 'thug for enforcing religion' concept and staged a short-lived Islamic coup of Trinidad and Tobago in 1990. That group has gotten quite a long list of murders, kidnapping, and corruption behind it. It is bad news when an assassin has at least 4 names to go by... that group is Jamaat al Muslimeen, led by your typical black power Imam/teacher/guide/mafioso. His folks are well nigh capable of doing this if they wanted to... which some few of them no doubt want.

The other major group to worry about, Waajihatul Islaamiyyah, has been implicated in doing something with the Liquefied Natural Gas facilities in TT. They are a splinter group with ties to al Qaeda, Hamas, Muslim Brotherhood, Jemaa Islamiya and so on. Now, picture waking up and finding half of Providence, RI or Hartford, CT blasted to smithereens by an LNG tanker explosion.

Which is more capable?

Which is worse?

They both want Islamic revolution and overthrow of government and to attack the US. One is the slow, steady, grow slow, intimidate, kill, and basically thug your way to power. The other is the al Qaeda approach of 'do as much damage as possible per strike' deal. One has proven capability, the other is still in the planning capability but with high ambitions.

As plots go, one security person put it that these guys had low capability and high ambitions. May I point out that this was a *low capability* plot? Almost all of it is publicly accessible or within blast radius of easy bombing and the Madrid bombing pointed out using cellphones for distributed, simultaneous explosions. That is now simple enough to do that waiting for them to *get* the capability is too late as it is mere days from capability to execution and they may have unknown *others* via their intermediary organization.

Glad that we got them in the conspiracy stage.

And remember that these are just the *low capaibility* threats that have been found. The *high capability* organizations are caught much, much closer to execution... or, as Madrid, London, India, Bali and others point out... not caught at all.
