Pitts carefully cultivates stark beauty in this neorealist drama based on a novel by Mahmoud Dowlatabadi and the heartbreaking poetry of Mehdi Akhavan Sales. A hot-blooded mechanic arrives in a meager town on the outskirts of Tehran where, under the bleak curtain of winter, he falls in love with a woman whose husband has left her behind to seek a better life abroad. With its undercurrents of sexual tension and a vulnerable yet volatile antihero, this is one of the most daring Iranian films in many years.
