An Exchange on Temporary Marriages in Iran
Nazy:
In fact temporary marriages are a lot more complicated, yet a lot simpler than that. Without delving into the politics of it, and the roots of why it is even necessary to have Sigheh(temporary marriage as short as one day to several years according to the contract) in Iran (each of which will require their own five pages), I will try to answer you as best as I understand it without too much fanfare.Let's put the cases where it is only for a few hours and it is nothing but sanctioned prostitution, aside. That is what it is and does not need further explanation--World's oldest profession, only legitimized through religion.
There is another group of women who are uneducated, poor, and desperate, and they may become a man's second wife to gain his financial support, and this is done through temporary marriages. A sad situation, but given the alternatives (prostitution itself becoming one of the few options available to those women) this might actually work out for some.
This, I believe, is the only really degrading application of Sigheh, because those women think they are "married" to somebody, without real rights, and without complete rights for their children from these "marriages."Among the more educated and emancipated Iranians, however, temporary marriages are very prevelant these days.
This is where couples want to co-habit unofficially (without a formal marriage, as is customary in the west). A temporary marriage license enables them to live together without the possibility of harassment by the government who would interfere in such matters. Would you believe it if I told you that when some young couples fall in love these days, because of the high rate of divorce, their parents many times encourage their children to go live with each other before they decide to get married? Doing this is only possible if the couple obtains a temporary marriage license. Even when they don't want to live together but want to have active sexual relationships and travel inside Iran together, dating Iranian couples receive a temporary marriage license which enables them to check into hotel rooms (hotels won't let an "unrelated" man and woman to check in together.)
You will agree that this is not prostitution, but a practical solution to a problem. The long and short of it, Serendip, is that in today's Iran Sigheh is not all about prostitution (receiving financial consideration in return for sex). It is, in many cases, all about sex, and not about marriage or money. And as I understand it, a lot more sex is going on there than is publicly acknowledged! Are you surprised? The world's youngest nation, remember that one. Like you, I used to hate Sigheh with a passion. Under the circumstances in Iran, I have adjusted my thinking and think that it might actually be a blessing in disguise in some cases. I hope this is helpful.

wow, that was such an eye-opening revelation to me. It might be economically cost efficient for the society as a whole as a self-preservation mechanism but I doubt very much it enhances dignity, self-respect, self-control, or personal or spiritual growth of any kind.

I also should add that this practice will have devastating effect on the moral and collective conscious and fabric of the society in the long run.

Salam Serendip! Please don't get me wrong! In no way do I condone temporary marriage as an acceptable moral or social concept, given a choice. For one thing a "temporary marriage" is an oxymoron. How can you have a "temporary union" or a "temporary family?"For another, having this fake "marriage" promotes duplicity in the society and mocks the importance of committed relationships and families. And even when it is done for access to consensual sex, as I reported, it is done in reaction to the government's "carte blanche" for asking what you and another person are doing in the privacy of your bedroom--a violation of people's basic human rights. As Shamloo said:...dahanat ra mibooyandkeh mabada gofteh bashidoostat daram....(sorry if the poem is not quoted correctly here, I don't have access to my book right now to fix it.)Anyhow, yes, I do believe all of the above will continue to degrade people's values (ironically their religious values) and to make a mockery of committed relationships. Any positive things I said about the routine is strictly from a "survival" point of view.Take care my friend.--End exchange
This practice is so wrong on so many levels that one can write a book about it. If all governments (especially, the mullahs government who own the country and all of its revenues) absolved their responsibility in tackling unemployment and poverty then the world would be one gigantic brothel...
Note: This practice is more popular among the Shi'ite not the Sunni muslims. However, Sunni muslims practice Polygamy just the same and divorce is the exclusive right of the husband in both traditions. Shi'ite make up around 400 million out of the 1.5 billion muslims.

Update from Kamangir: According to a new bill just suggested by the government to the parliament, men do not have to ask the permission of their wife for a second marriage. According to the bill which is titled “Support for Families”, men only need to prove their economic power for the second marriage [Persian]. A member of the opposition in the parliament called the bill “a disaster” [Persian].

It is sad that women have few other options and that nothing is being done to give them other options.
If a man dicides that he wants to marry a second wife and the first wife dosn't agree, the only choice this lady has if she dosn't want to tolerate another woman in her life is to divorce, but she has to remember that the children will be given to the husband! so the situation is this: you get married, but the husband is not obligated to be loyal to you. he can find a new woman at any moment. you don't like it? leave the home you worked to build, and let another woman take your kids. this is in case of normal marriages! forget about Sighe ones!
the only good thing about sighe is this: you won't have much obligation to your husband. And if you sign the contract only for three months and then decide you dont' want to renew it you are free to look for other men just like a man is in a normal marriage!! Then you can get even with men. Its better for all Iranian women to only become sighe instead of getting married. They won't have to worry about working hard for a family in which the men can throw them out whenever they want.Real security is in being a sighe!(by the way its been researched that most sighe cases are married men , not single men. why? becuase a single girl needs her father's permission to become a sighe (temporary whore) and most normal people in Iranian culture wont' allow it. if this single girl becomes a sighe, she may never get a chance to marry in a normal marriage anymore. although some high class people may use the law for helping their kids enjoy having girlfriend or boy friends.
You're right about that anonymous. Sigheh does not exist in the sunni religion. What a travesty....
Your readers, including blogger Kamangir, seem to mistake "sigheh" that is 'temporary marriage' for polygamy in Iran and Arab lands.
Sunnis very much allow having four wives at the same time too an similar to Iran, that IS NOT Sigheh. That is POLYGAMY of the first kind and if one can afford it. It is according to Mohammed's practice, similar to sigheh.
Sigheh, on the other hand, is a form of legalized prostitution which is 'temporary marriage'.
Even Nazy's logic is flawed. Being temporary married aka sigheh for convenience of travel and acceptance within Moslem Iran and Islamic Republic of Iran is not an argument. It may be legally convenient, but culturally unacceptable to most Iranians. Even if few Iranian families allow their female offsprings to live with their boyfriends, most don't appreciate it. I think even Nazy knows that. Mostly, sigheh is for convenience of Islamic Republic of Iran and whoever wants to hide behind its laws. It is a difference between Iranian and Western culture.
Did you see this site advertising sigheh?
http://jostojoo.blogsky.com/
Since divorce is an exclusive right of the husband and men are allowed to have more than one wife, it doesn't really matter for the woman whether it's sigheh or polygamy. Both are abominable acts humanely immoral. Just because religion sanctions a behavior, it doesn't automatically make it moral or ethical. Many religious laws are immoral.
Since marrying more than one woman (not talking about sigheh) but Sharia actual marriage of 4 wives, never mind divorce, is the exclusive right of any man in IRI who has a real dick, it really doesn't matter about the fictitious Bill. This Bill does not even exist. The Bill is for news media to make headlines and for confused Iranians and Westerners consumption.
Unless you want to bring IRI down by Sunni practices, I would delete or qualify the {Note: This practice is only practiced by Shi'ite not Sunni muslims. Shi'ite make up around 400 million out of the 1.5 billion muslims.}. Because it is misleading and Sunnis do practice polygamy in a big way. Just take a good look at Saudi Arabia. Even Sigheh is practiced on the sidelines. There is very little to no difference in practice between Sunnis Saudi Arabia or even Bin Laden's or Taliban Islam as opposed to Mollahs.
dear new anonymous:(I'm the old anonymous!!)
in spite of what you say I still hope that Iranian people invite Saudi Arabia control the country.they are much better than the thugs who are controling the country and still as Islamic as Iranian people want to see. you can't change Iranians so much but even a little change toward behaving more humanly is good. what do you prefer: a law that permists beheadings and men having four wives or a law that permits:men having four wives and also bringing a different woman home for one hour every night, stoning, hanging people in the streets, torturing people in the streets, and eye-gauging as a punishment. I prefer the Arab way.
Serendip:I just realized anonymous is too long to type. you call call me A now !!! LOL
Well said, Serendip!
A, why don't you move to one of your favorite countries of *Arabist* kind? Arabistan would be good for ya *LOL* but don't drink too much there *A*. What do you prefer, beheadings or cutting your lil *finger* in saudi arabia? I'd ship you over to saudi arabia in no time, since you prefer it. And, hey you can't be an internet commando or moron as you are in Saudi Arabia either. You're an IDIOT for sure! haha...
Serendip, make sure "he" or "it" gets this message!
